The liberation referenced here is the Soviet recapture of Ukrainian territory completed in October 1944, a campaign that cost the Red Army staggering casualties across the Dnieper offensive and the brutal fighting around the Korsun–Cherkasy pocket. Issuing this coin in 2019 carries an obvious political tension: by that point Ukraine had been at war with Russian-backed separatists in the Donbas for five years, making a commemoration rooted in Soviet military triumph a complicated act of official memory.
