Ukraine's commemoration of the 1945 victory carries particular weight given the country's wartime experience — the Ukrainian SSR suffered some of the highest per-capita losses of any Soviet republic, with estimates of civilian and military dead ranging from 5 to 8 million. The Donbas and western Ukraine were among the most heavily contested and repeatedly occupied territories in the entire Eastern Front campaign.
The 75th anniversary series was issued amid an ongoing armed conflict in eastern Ukraine, making the framing of this commemoration politically charged in ways no previous anniversary had been.
