Bad Ischl's notgeld issues of 1920 were produced during Austria's acute small-change shortage in the years following the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy. As a spa resort town whose economy depended on seasonal visitors, Bad Ischl had practical reasons to keep local commerce moving — low-denomination emergency paper filled the gap left by hoarded or simply absent coins.
The Jaksch/Pick JPR0077a series is among the smaller Austrian municipal issues, and the 5 Heller represents the lowest face value in that run.
