Austrian Notgeld from the early 1920s proliferated at the municipal level because small-denomination coinage had effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply never reminted fast enough after the war. Eben, a small parish community in Upper Austria, issued these 5 Heller notes as a purely local stopgap, valid only within the immediate area and redeemable in theory once proper coinage returned.
Franz Schmiedinger signed as the responsible local authority. The redemption window for most Austrian Gemeinde Notgeld closed by late 1922, after which unredeemed notes became void.
