By the late 1970s, Czechoslovakia's lowest denomination had become largely symbolic — the 5 haléřů could purchase almost nothing in practical terms, yet the state continued minting it through 1990 as a matter of ideological tidiness. The aluminium alloy used here was standard across the Warsaw Pact's small-denomination coinage, chosen for cheapness rather than durability. These pieces circulated until the Velvet Revolution rendered the entire haléř coinage obsolete almost overnight.
