The 2013 issue marks the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the Dutch colonies, formally enacted on July 1, 1863 — though emancipation in Suriname and the Antilles included a mandatory ten-year "state supervision" period, meaning enslaved people were not fully free until 1873. The Netherlands was among the last Western European powers to abolish the institution. This coin was struck under Willem-Alexander's first year as reigning monarch, following the abdication of Queen Beatrix in April 2013.
