The surrounding legend reads FRANZ JOSEPH I V G G KAISER V OESTERREICH, distributed evenly around the periphery within a beaded border. The date 1855 appears in the lower exergual area beneath the portrait. The high-relief modeling of the emperor's features reflects the refined engraving style of the mid-nineteenth century Vienna mint workshop.
