The Danziger Zentralkasse was established specifically to manage the monetary affairs of the Free City of Danzig after its separation from Germany under the Treaty of Versailles — a city-state arrangement that left the territory politically awkward and financially exposed. The 1923 issue came during a period when the Danzig Gulden, pegged to the British pound rather than the collapsing German Mark, was under serious pressure from cross-border inflation and smuggling of depreciated Reichsmarks.
Local printing was a practical necessity — Danzig's isolation made foreign contract printing slow and expensive during the crisis months of 1923.
