| Opmerkingen |
When the Netherlands fell to Germany in May 1940, Suriname's financial administration was effectively cut off from Amsterdam. De Surinaamsche Bank, unable to rely on Dutch printers, turned to the American Bank Note Company in New York — the same firm already producing currency for several Latin American republics and familiar with tropical-climate paper specifications.
The 1942 series was a direct consequence of that severance, not a routine reprint. ABNC plates from this period are generally well-executed, and the Surinamese wartime issues are no exception technically.
Pick 88 is the 5 Gulden denomination from this emergency-driven series, one of several values produced by ABNC for Suriname during the occupation years.
