The obverse is dominated by a large diagonal overprint reading 'REPUBLIK MALUKU SELATAN' applied across the face of this De Javasche Bank issue dated 13 April 1939. To the upper left, a vignette of a traditional Javanese wayang figure appears in intaglio against a finely engraved guilloche underprint. The denomination '5' appears at left and right, with the issuer's name 'DE JAVASCHE BANK' in bold letterpress at top center, followed by 'BETAALT AAN TOONDER' and 'VIJF GULDEN'; two manuscript signatures appear at lower right above the titles 'SECRETARIS' and 'PRESIDENT', with the serial number NN 00948 printed twice. |

The reverse is executed in multicolor letterpress and intaglio, centered on an elaborate circular rosette guilloche of great complexity, surrounded by an ornate geometric border. The denomination numeral '5' appears in each upper corner within decorative panels, with the letters 'J' and 'B' flanking the central design. Warning texts appear in four languages — Dutch, Javanese script, Arabic, and Chinese — in vertical panels at left and right, with the printer's imprint 'JOH. ENSCHEDE EN ZONEN' at lower left and 'JOHN GROBET FEC.' at lower right. |
