De Surinaamsche Bank was a private commercial bank granted the exclusive right to issue banknotes in Suriname — then Dutch Guiana — a privilege it held for well over a century. Joh. Enschedé en Zonen, the Haarlem security printer with roots going back to 1703, produced the entire series, and their craftsmanship at this period was among the finest in European banknote production.
The 1935–1940 date range reflects a span of authorized issue rather than a single print run. Individual notes within P#85 can often be more precisely dated by manuscript or stamped dates, which Enschedé left partly completed on some printings in this series.
