De Javasche Bank, established in Batavia in 1828 as the Dutch colonial central bank for the Netherlands East Indies, had all its notes printed in Haarlem by Enschedé throughout this period — the physical notes traveled from the Netherlands to Java before entering circulation, a logistical fact that gave any disruption at sea real monetary consequences. The twenty-three-year span covered by P#61 encompasses the bank's pre-war stability, the sharp disruptions of the First World War on Dutch colonial finance, and the postwar inflationary pressures that preceded a complete reissue series.
