Obverse description Plain typographic note printed in black on cream paper with a tan border carrying repeated letterpress text reading "FÜNF GULDEN" and the numeral "5" on all four sides, the border inverted at the foot. The central panel, enclosed within a double-rule frame, carries the title "Darlehen-Schein der Stadt Kaiserslautern" in bold Fraktur script above the large denomination inscription "FÜNF GULDEN / SÜDDEUTSCHER WAEHRUNG". Below, a cursive-script promise-to-pay clause states payment three months after conclusion of peace, dated Kaiserslautern, 31 July 1870, with printed signature captions for the Cassirer and the Bürgermeisteramt, each completed in manuscript.
Obverse lettering 5 FÜNF GULDEN 5 No. Darlehen-Schein der Stadt Kaiserslautern FÜNF GULDEN SÜDDEUTSCHER WAEHRUNG wird von der Stadt Kaiserslautern dem Inhaber dieses Scheines drei Monate nach dem Friedensschluß gezahlt. KAISERSLAUTERN, den 31 Juli 1870. UNTERSCHRIFT DES CASSIRERS: DAS BÜRGERMEISTERAMT: 5 FÜNF GULDEN 5
Reverse description The reverse is printed in black on the same cream stock and enclosed within an ornate repeating-pattern border. A large central oval vignette carries a multi-line Fraktur text block explaining that the loan was issued by the City of Kaiserslautern in the interest of industry for the sum of fl. 100,000, authorised by resolution of the Royal Government of the Palatinate of 23 July and the Kaiserslautern City Council of 28 July 1870, and guaranteed by the assets of the city. A typeset line reading "5 fl. südd. Wahr." runs across the top and bottom margins, the lower one inverted.
