Obverse description The obverse is dominated by an elaborate intaglio-engraved ornamental border of dense scrollwork and foliate cartouches, with the denomination numeral '5' repeated in each corner. The Dutch royal arms appear in a crowned shield vignette at the top centre, flanked by symmetrical rococo flourishes. The central text panel bears the issuer's name, the bearer clause 'betaalt aan Toonder', the denomination 'VIJF GULDEN' in bold letterpress, and the place and date of issue 'BATAVIA, 1 October 1866', above two manuscript signatures under the designations SECRETARIS and PRESIDENT.

Reverse description The reverse is printed in blue ink and divided into distinct text panels within an oval guilloche border with rosette ornaments at top and bottom. The left central panel carries a warning inscription in Dutch citing statutory references, below which runs a further text block in Javanese script. The right panel contains the equivalent warning text in Arabic script alongside a tabular panel in Chinese characters, reflecting the multilingual nature of currency circulation in the Dutch East Indies.
