At the centre of the cross is a small escutcheon charged with the crown of Charlemagne, representing the office of Arch-Treasurer of the Holy Roman Empire. The date, split as 17 and 16, appears in the legend above the uppermost shield, with the full peripheral Latin inscription referencing the king's German titles reading BRVN ET·L·DVX S·I·R·A·TH ET·EL.
