Obverse description Central field dominated by the arms of Aragon, depicted as four vertical pales (bars) on a plain field, a characteristic emblem of the Crown of Aragon. The numeral V appears to the left of the arms, denoting the denomination of 5 groats. The legend, rendered in Latin, runs partially along the border separated by pellets, reading V R PRINCIPATVS·CATALONI, identifying the issuing authority as the Principality of Catalonia. The flan is irregular in shape, typical of hammered coinage of the period. The overall style is consistent with emergency siege coinage struck during the Catalan Revolt of 1640–1641.
