Obverse description Red-orange note printed on a dense guilloche underprint covering the entire field, with the bank title BANQUE DE LA RÉPUBLIQUE D'HAÏTI in bold letterpress at the top within a decorative cartouche. The central vignette, set within an oval medallion flanked by radiating guilloche rosettes, presents the Haitian national coat of arms — a palm tree above a cannon, drum, anchors, and crossed flags with the motto L'UNION FAIT LA FORCE on a scroll below. The denomination numeral "5" appears in large format within a guilloche roundel at the right, with CINQ GOURDES in bold lettering across the lower portion of the note.

Thomas De La Rue printed this series through a turbulent stretch for Haiti — the early 1990s brought the September 1991 military coup against Aristide, international sanctions, and a near-total collapse of formal economic activity. Notes of this denomination circulated hard and fast in an economy running largely on black-market exchange rates that bore little relationship to official parity.

The security thread on this issue is a simple unwindowed filament, an older De La Rue specification that the series would later upgrade. Worth noting for collectors sorting varieties within P#261.
