Ashimori was a tiny 25,000-koku domain in Bitchu Province, and its right to issue paper currency — like all domain notes, or hansatsu — rested entirely on the Tokugawa shogunate's tolerance of the practice rather than any formal monetary authority. These notes circulated only within the domain's own territory and among merchants who accepted the domain's creditworthiness as collateral. For a domain this small, that was a genuinely precarious arrangement.
The fun denomination is a subdivision of the momme, placing this firmly in the silver-denominated hansatsu tradition of western Japan rather than the gold-reckoning system dominant in Edo.
