The Democratic Republic of Congo reissued the "Zaïre" country name as simply "Congo" in 1997 following Laurent-Désiré Kabila's overthrow of Mobutu Sese Seko, and the Banque Centrale began issuing a wave of foreign-themed collector pieces almost immediately after. This 1999 piece belongs to that flood of novelty issues produced for the international numismatic market rather than domestic circulation — Congo had no meaningful monetary relationship with the United Kingdom, and the coin almost certainly never crossed the Congo River.
