Additional information

This piece belongs to a wave of novelty legal tender struck by the Democratic Republic of Congo in the late 1990s — coins nominally issued by the Banque Centrale but produced entirely for the international collector market, with no meaningful circulation intended or achieved. The DRC authorized dozens of these issues during this period, licensing foreign heads of state, wildlife subjects, and pop culture figures to generate hard currency revenue while the country's own monetary system was in effective collapse following decades of Mobutu-era mismanagement and the chaos of the First and Second Congo Wars.

Carl XVI Gustaf has no historical connection to the Congo.
