Piéforts are deliberately struck at double or greater thickness on standard-diameter flans, a French mint practice dating to the medieval period that continued into the twentieth century as a way of producing presentation-quality specimens for official distribution and archival sets. Monaco's relationship with the Paris Mint made such issues routine for the principality. The 1960 piéfort essai for this denomination was never a circulation proposal — its existence was administrative and archival from the outset.
Gadoury MC152 is scarce in any condition; surviving population figures from auction appearances suggest production was extremely limited, as was standard for Monaco piéforts of this period.
