Monaco's 1960 coinage reform followed Charles de Gaulle's introduction of the nouveau franc, which revalued the French franc at 100:1. Monaco, bound by monetary convention to France, was obligated to realign its own denominations accordingly — this 5 franc piece replaced a series of smaller-denomination silver coins that had become obsolete overnight.
The .835 fineness matches the contemporary French silver standard exactly, a requirement of the Franco-Monegasque monetary agreement.
