The "5 Francs Quetzal" denomination is a curiosity of the Democratic Republic of Congo's collector-targeted issues from the early 2000s, a period when the country's mint authority contracted heavily with foreign producers to generate foreign exchange through novelty coinage — pieces that circulated in coin cabinets, not pockets. The quetzal is native to Central America, bearing no geographic or cultural connection to the Congo whatsoever.
These issues were struck under license arrangements common to several small and economically stressed nations during this period, with the DRC effectively licensing its monetary authority for third-party wildlife series.
