Beschrijving keerzijde The denomination 5 FRANCS and the date 1883 are inscribed in three lines at the centre of the field, surrounded by a laurel wreath tied at the base with a ribbon bow. Aanvullende informatie

Ranavalona III ascended to the Malagasy throne in 1883, the same year this pattern was struck — almost certainly commissioned in anticipation of a formal coinage that never materialized for her reign. France was already applying sustained military and diplomatic pressure on Madagascar, and by 1885 a protectorate had been imposed, stripping the kingdom of its foreign policy and, effectively, its monetary ambitions. The full annexation came in 1896, ending the Merina monarchy entirely.

As a pattern issue, this piece was never approved for circulation. KM# Pn1 designation confirms its status as a trial strike, likely produced in Paris.
