Vichy's 1941 coinage program represented a deliberate break from Third Republic issues, with the new État Français replacing Marianne and republican iconography as part of Pétain's National Revolution. Copper-nickel was retained for this denomination, but that would change: wartime metal demands led to the abandonment of copper-nickel for most French coinage by 1942, making this a transitional issue with only a single year of production in this composition.
