| 表面の説明 | The reverse die serves as the obverse of this essai, featuring a bold, high-relief bare-headed portrait of a male figure facing left, rendered in a modernist sculptural style. The circular legend BANQUE NATIONALE DU RWANDA arcs across the upper field, while the date 1964 appears in the lower field. The word ESSAI is incused in small letters to the left of the portrait, identifying this piece as a trial strike. The engraver's initials CVD are present in the lower field. |

Rwanda's 1964 pattern coinage was produced during the country's earliest years of monetary independence, having only established the Banque Nationale du Rwanda in 1964 following separation from the Rwanda-Burundi currency union. This bronze striking is an essai — a test piece submitted for official evaluation — and was never approved for circulation. The franc denominations that did enter production that year were struck in aluminum, making this bronze composition a rejected proposal rather than a precursor.
