Mohammed V had been maneuvering carefully under French Protectorate authority since 1927, and the 1946 coinage program — including this essai — was part of a broader assertion of Moroccan monetary identity at a moment when the Sultan's political ambitions were sharpening considerably. Within six years, he would be exiled to Madagascar by the French.
