Obverse description Central design features a large six-pointed star (Seal of Solomon) set within a beaded inner circle, with the Hijri date 1365 inscribed within an ornate circular cartouche at the center of the star. Elaborate arabesque foliate scrollwork fills the field between the inner circle and the dentilated rim. The legend EMPIRE CHERIFIEN arcs along the upper periphery in Latin characters, while an Arabic inscription curves along the lower periphery. Two small five-pointed stars flank the legends at the sides.

Additional information

Mohammed V had been maneuvering carefully under French Protectorate authority since 1927, and the 1946 coinage program — including this essai — was part of a broader assertion of Moroccan monetary identity at a moment when the Sultan's political ambitions were sharpening considerably. Within six years, he would be exiled to Madagascar by the French. Essais of this type were struck in limited quantities for official approval purposes and rarely entered general circulation, which accounts for their survival in consistently choice condition.
