Obverse description Central field features a large five-pointed star set within a circular interlaced arabesque band, the star enclosing an ornate cartouche bearing the Hijri date 1370 flanked by small decorative elements. The arabesque surround is elaborately worked with foliate and geometric interlace motifs characteristic of Moroccan Islamic decorative arts. The legend EMPIRE CHERIFIEN arcs along the upper periphery in Latin characters, while an Arabic inscription curves along the lower rim reading the Sharifian State of Morocco and noting the mint of Paris. The overall design was engraved by Edmond-Émile Lindauer in the tradition of the Monnaie de Paris.
