Obverse description Central field features a bold, high-relief effigy of Pierre Mendès France in three-quarter facing portrait, rendered in a naturalistic and expressive style by engraver Émile Rousseau. The subject's aged facial features are depicted with considerable sculptural detail, including pronounced brow, deep-set eyes, and characteristic physiognomy. The name PIERRE MENDÈS FRANCE appears in the right field in two lines. The engraver's initial R is visible at lower left of the portrait. The coin disc is set within a broad lead collar, characteristic of the épreuve de contrôle format used by the Monnaie de Paris for die-trial verification purposes.
