Louis II was 71 years old and Monaco had spent the war years under Italian and then German occupation when this essai was produced in 1945. It was never adopted for circulation — the 5 Franc denomination was effectively obsolete by the time liberation came, rendered meaningless by wartime monetary disruption. Essais of this type were struck in very small quantities for official presentation and archival purposes, not commerce.
The use of .900 gold for a trial piece of this denomination is itself telling — a statement of intent rather than practicality.
