This piece belongs to the wave of foreign-issued commemoratives that flooded the market in the late 1990s, when the Democratic Republic of Congo — freshly renamed under Laurent-Désiré Kabila after the fall of Mobutu — licensed its mint authority to overseas distributors hungry for the collector trade. The coin has no meaningful connection to Liechtenstein's monetary history; the principality has used the Swiss franc since 1920.
