Pestalozzi died in 1827, making this a sesquicentennial commemorative. The choice of subject was deliberate — Switzerland had been quietly exporting his pedagogical model for decades, and by the 1970s his influence on progressive education movements in Europe and North America gave the issue an almost contemporary relevance. The Federal Council approved the design under Swissmint's commemorative program as the series was still finding its identity in cupro-nickel after the silver franc's effective end as a circulation metal.
