| Obverse description | The allegorical figure of La Semeuse (the Sower), personifying the French Republic, strides purposefully to the left, her flowing robes and hair windswept behind her as she scatters seed from a satchel held in her left hand. Radiating sun rays emanate from behind the horizon line in the lower field, lending the composition a strongly Art Nouveau character. The encircling legend REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE runs along the left and right periphery in bold raised lettering. The engraver's signature O. ROTY appears incuse along the lower field. The design, originally modeled by Louis-Oscar Roty in 1897, is rendered here with exceptional high relief characteristic of a piedfort striking. |
