| Additional information |
The Democratic Republic of the Congo issued a wave of commemorative 5 Franc pieces around 2002 with almost no connection to domestic monetary circulation — the country had been running on Congolese francs since redenomination in 1998, and these pieces were produced almost entirely for the collector export market. Germany's runner-up finish at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, defeated 2–0 by Brazil in the Yokohama final, is an unusual subject for a Congolese issue, but the DRC was prolific in licensing topical sports commemoratives to foreign distributors during this period.
