The Banque Centrale du Congo Belge et du Ruanda-Urundi was itself a new institution in 1952, having been carved out of the Banque du Congo Belge only the previous year as Belgium sought tighter monetary control over its central African territories. This essai — a trial strike submitted for approval rather than circulation — was never adopted for regular issue. The 5-franc denomination in silver went no further than the pattern stage.
