| Obverse description | A finely detailed roaring lion's head effigy occupies the central inner circle, facing left with a full mane rendered in high relief. Surrounding the inner circle, the legend REPUBLIQUE DEMOCRATIQUE DU CONGO curves along the middle annulus. The outer border bears the inscription BANQUE CENTRALE at the top and 5 FRANCS at the base, separated by four six-pointed stars at the cardinal points. The date is divided at left and right within the outer ring: 19 to the left and 99 to the right. |

This piece has nothing to do with Denmark. It was issued by the Banque Centrale du Congo — one of dozens of foreign-themed commemoratives struck by central African nations during the 1990s specifically for the collector market, not for domestic circulation. Congo, Benin, and several other nations licensed their minting authority during this period to produce coins commemorating foreign royals, historical figures, and anniversaries with no connection to the issuing country. Frederik and Mary's 1999 appearance here predates their 2004 wedding by five years.
