The Democratic Republic of the Congo has issued an enormous volume of novelty coinage since the late 1990s, much of it produced by European minting houses targeting the collector market rather than domestic circulation. These pieces have no meaningful monetary function in-country and were never intended to. This example is gold-plated copper — a composition that flatters the piece photographically while keeping production costs low enough to maximize distributor margins.
The chameleon series belongs to a wave of DRC wildlife issues that flooded the market in the early 2000s. Mintage controls on these issues were rarely published or enforced.
