Obverse description A finely detailed effigy of a roaring lion's head, facing left in three-quarter view, is presented within a recessed inner circle at the center of the coin. Surrounding the inner circle, the legend REPUBLIQUE DEMOCRATIQUE DU CONGO arcs around the field. The broad outer border carries the issuing authority BANQUE CENTRALE at the top, the denomination 5 FRANCS at the bottom, and the divided date 19-99 flanking the design on either side, all separated by five-pointed stars.
