Obverse lettering أحمد باشا باى تونس ٥ فرنكات ١٣٥٨
(Translation: Ahmad Pasha Bey of Tunisia 5 Francs 1358)
Reverse description Central field displays the denomination '5 FRANCS' and Gregorian date '1939' in bold upright lettering, surrounded by an elaborate Art Nouveau-style wreath of intertwining foliate and floral vine scrolls. The legend 'TUNISIE' arcs across the upper portion and 'PROTECTORAT FRANÇAIS' curves along the lower arc, both in Latin capitals. The word 'ESSAI' appears in small letters at the lower right of the field, identifying this piece as a pattern or trial strike. The intricate vine border, engraved by Lucien Georges Bazor, is characteristic of the refined Parisian Mint style of the period.
