Ahmad II ibn Ali ruled as Bey of Tunis under French protectorate, with monetary policy firmly in Paris's hands. This issue was struck at the Paris Mint during a period when France was struggling to maintain the gold standard — a struggle it ultimately abandoned in 1936 when the Popular Front government devalued the franc. The .680 fineness reflects deliberate cost reduction applied to colonial and protectorate issues well before equivalent debasement reached metropolitan French coinage.
