Additional information

Rwanda's earliest coinage was issued in the immediate aftermath of independence from Belgian trusteeship in 1962, with the Banque Nationale established shortly thereafter to replace the Rwanda-Burundi franc. These bronze pieces were struck at the Brussels mint, reflecting the practical reality that Rwanda had no domestic minting infrastructure and remained financially dependent on Belgian institutional arrangements even as political ties were severed.
