The Banque d'Emission du Rwanda et du Burundi was a transitional institution, created specifically to manage the currency of the two UN trust territories as they moved toward independence from Belgian administration. Both Rwanda and Burundi became independent in 1962, but the bank and its notes continued in use briefly afterward — the issuing dates spanning the transition rather than neatly bracketing it.
This note was superseded almost immediately once each country established its own national bank. Burundi launched the Banque du Royaume du Burundi in 1964; Rwanda followed with the Banque Nationale du Rwanda. The shared-currency arrangement, a vestige of the Belgian Rwanda-Urundi colonial structure, had a very short functional life.
