Togo in 1956 was a United Nations Trust Territory administered by France, not a French colony in the conventional sense — a distinction that shaped its coinage. The Institut d'Émission de l'Afrique Équatoriale Française et du Cameroun struck this piece as part of a shared monetary framework, yet Togo required its own distinct issues to satisfy the terms of its trusteeship status under international oversight.
Independence came just four years later, in 1960, rendering this a short-lived series.
