The Banque d'État du Maroc, though nominally a Moroccan institution, was effectively a French-controlled organ operating under the Act of Algeciras (1906). When the fall of France in 1940 and the subsequent Allied landings in North Africa in November 1942 disrupted the usual supply chain through metropolitan French printers, the bank turned to American sources. E. A. Wright of Philadelphia, better known for engraved stationery and securities, produced this emergency wartime issue.
The 1943–44 date range reflects the period of transition as Allied forces consolidated control over French Morocco, with currency supply a practical military and administrative concern.
