The composition fills the entire field in high relief, with fine engraved detail throughout the animals' coats and vegetation. The engraver's signature G. B. BAZOR appears discreetly to the right of centre. The circumferential legend REPUBLICA DE GUINEA ECUATORIAL arcs along the upper rim in raised Latin characters. |

Below the numeral, the denomination FRANCOS and the date 1985 are inscribed in two lines. The legend BANQUE DES ETATS DE L'AFRIQUE CENTRALE curves along the upper rim within a decorative scroll cartouche. The BEAC's franc CFA coinage exists because of a currency arrangement negotiated at the end of World War II, when France guaranteed convertibility of the franc zones in exchange for preferential trade ties with its African territories. The arrangement survived independence across the 1960s largely intact, with the CFA franc pegged first to the French franc and later to the euro. The 1985 aluminum bronze 5 francs replaced an earlier aluminum alloy issue — the change in composition was driven by vending machine compatibility and durability concerns in member states, not any monetary reform.
