Willem-Alexander acceded to the Dutch throne on 30 April 2013 following the abdication of his mother, Queen Beatrix — the third consecutive abdication in the House of Orange-Nassau, a dynastic pattern without parallel among current European monarchies. Aruba, as a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, issues its own coinage independently through the Centrale Bank van Aruba but marks events of the wider kingdom when politically significant.
The one-year anniversary struck in aluminium bronze kept production costs low for what was essentially a commemorative circulation issue.
