Aruba's florin coinage exists because the island chose not to join the Netherlands Antilles guilder system when it obtained separate status within the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1986. The Centrale Bank van Aruba was established that same year specifically to manage a distinct currency — a political and economic insistence on autonomy that stopped well short of full independence, which Aruba had originally scheduled for 1996 but indefinitely postponed.
Aluminium bronze was selected for durability in a high-tourism circulation environment. The series ran under Queen Beatrix until her abdication in April 2013.
