Obverse description The copper-nickel centre features a bust of a Roman-era figure in the left foreground, draped and holding a scroll, evoking the city's ancient Batavian and Roman heritage. Behind him stands a full-length Roman soldier in military attire, bearing a spear and shield, positioned centrally in the field. To the right, two heraldic shields bearing the arms of Nijmegen are depicted, surmounted by a crown, with a quill pen and inkwell rendered in the lower right field. The copper outer ring carries the legend NEDERLAND 2000 along the upper arc and NIJMEGEN along the right arc in raised Latin lettering.
