The Yemen Arab Republic's first decimal coinage series, introduced in 1971, replaced the older riyals-and-buqsha system as part of a broader modernization push following the civil war that had consumed the country through most of the 1960s. The Bank of Yemen — only formally established in 1971 itself — issued these coins almost simultaneously with its own founding.
